Ford F-150 vs. Toyota Tundra

Compare the Ford F-150 to the Toyota Tundra

When you're the country's top truck for four decades, comparisons to other industry offerings are inevitable. One such model competing for Hawaiians' attention is the Toyota Tundra. It's a reliable truck with a lot going for it, but going head-to-head with a legend like the F-150 reveals its shortcomings.

Ford F-150 vs. Toyota Tundra: Engine Options and Towing

Ford knows that not all truck-related tasks are the same. So, Aiea and Mililani drivers have a choice of six different engine options, allowing them to select their ideal blend of power and fuel efficiency. The base 3.3-liter V-6 is adequate for a variety of light-duty jobs. Generating 290 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque, it has a max tow rating of 7,700 pounds. If you need even more capability, each of the remaining five engine options delivers no less than 400 pound-feet of torque. Here's a quick look at their numbers, including their max tow ratings when properly equipped.

  • 2.7-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6: 325 horsepower; 400 pound-feet of torque - Max towing: 9,000 pounds.
  • 3.0-liter PowerStroke Turbo Diesel V-6: 250 horsepower; 440 pound-feet of torque - Max towing: 11,500 pounds.
  • 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6: 375 horsepower; 470 pound-feet of torque - Max towing: 13,200 pounds.
  • 5.0-liter V-8: 395 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque - Max towing: 11,500 pounds.
  • High Output 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6: 450 horsepower; 510 pound-feet of torque - Max towing: 11,000 pounds.

After eliminating its base 4.6-liter V-8, The Toyota Tundra offers just one engine option: a 5.7-liter V-8. It produces 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, and its towing capacity tops out at 10,100 pounds.

Ford F-150 vs. Toyota Tundra: Interior

When comparing the crew cab models, both trucks benefit from spacious cabins with ample headroom and legroom, upfront and in the back. The F-150 has noticeably more room in the second row, but the Tundra is more than adequate, and upfront, it's a tighter contest. However, looking at cabin quality and interior utility, the F-150 pulls ahead for good.

The F-150's cabin is well-built, with tight tolerances, high-quality materials, and lots of usable space throughout. The rear seats flip up, revealing a flat load floor to accommodate extra cargo. A glovebox, door pockets, and a few other compartments provide plenty of small-item storage solutions. There's even a deep center console with a removable tray.

The Tundra's cabin is OK for a platform that's more than a decade old. But after spending some time inside, one begins to notice the lower quality materials and other cost-cutting measures. The Tundra also suffers from a large hump in the floor, which severely limits the truck's interior cargo options. The glovebox is small, and the center console is difficult to access.

Ford F-150 vs. Toyota Tundra: Technology

In terms of available technology, the latest Toyota Tundra pulls a little closer. It finally offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, something that was long overdue. And, while these features are standard on the F-150 XLT and higher, they're included on the Tundra base model. So, Toyota has that going for it.

Both models offer a full suite of advanced driver-assistance technologies, and Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the Tundra lineup. The F-150 equips forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking at the base level, while the rest of the Ford Co-Pilot360 package is standard on the Lariat trim and above.
